physical defects

PHYSICAL DEFECTS VS. LOGICAL DEFECTS

There are two types of defects a hard drive can have, namely PHYSICAL DEFECTS and LOGICAL DEFECTS. The HARD DRIVE DATA RECOVERY process is completely different for each of the two types of defects. A physical defect occurs when a component of the hard drive no longer functions properly. The most common mechanical defects are:

  • partial or total failure of the read/write heads
  • the motor of the hard drive becomes blocked
  • burnt chips or circuits of the hard drive

PHYSICAL DEFECTS, in turn, divide into two categories: ELECTRICAL DEFECTS and MECHANICAL DEFECTS, the electrical ones involving a malfunction in the electrical area, while the mechanical ones involve a malfunction of the read heads or of the hard drive motor.

  • accidental deletion of a file, folder or entire partition
  • corruption of the files system due to virus infection
  • accidental formatting of a partition
  • bad sectors determining the operating system to become blocked
procedures of hard drive data recovery

PROCEDURES OF HARD DRIVE DATA RECOVERY

LOGICAL DEFECTS - Data recovery is performed by means of special equipment with which the data is extracted from the hard drive, even if it contains bad sectors or if the data has been deleted or the partitions formatted.

ELECTRICAL DEFECTS - It is necessary to restore or replace the damaged components and, in certain situations, also to recreate the firmware existing on the hard drive or to change the ROM. Once the hard drive can be accessed LOGICALLY, data recovery can be performed using the same procedures as in the case of logical defects.

MECHANICAL DEFECTS - In case of mechanical defects, the recovery procedures are executed inside a specialized environment of type CLEAN ROOM CLASS 100 which allows opening the hard drive without destroying the data it contains. In the normal air that we breathe daily there is an average of approximately 2,500,000 dust particles per cubic meter; basically, inside this CLEAN ROOM, the hard drive is protected from these particles that can alter the environment existing within the hard drive. The most frequently performed operations of mechanical nature consist in changing the read heads and moving the platters or restoring the blocked motor. These operations are executed by means of special equipment inside the CLEAN ROOM.
